Waiting
Today I am compelled to write about waiting. How much time do we spend consciously waiting for things. We wait in line, for spring to come, for Christmas, for a baby to be born, the clothes to dry,the kettle to boil,a toilet to flush, our workday to be over....the possibilities are endless. It has occurred to me and probably many other people that our lives are one giant waiting game. And with waiting comes its evil sister ....impatience. It has been said that patience is a virtue. As a naturally impatient person I am offering some ideas on how to combat impatience. You see , impatience leads to anger and frustration and in turn leads to sometimes disastrous events to happen. Think of the impatient person caught in a traffic jam, they start thinking about all the things they must do or accomplish that day, forgetting that hundreds of others have things to do as well...they start to get frustrated and aggressive honking their horn, jerking their way through traffic ,weaving their way around other cars...thinking that their artful and practised manoevers are gaining them valuable headway. Meanwhile unbeknowst to them they have caused a deadly accident to happen behind them. I myself abhor wasting time and so I have found ways to deal with waiting and impatience. First of all , I always keep a puzzle or book handy in case I have a longer wait than expected ie. doctor's or dentist appts. I try to grocery shop when I know it isn't going to be as busy. I take alternate routes in the city to avoid traffic.Audio books are a great invention for long car rides..it is amazing how fast the time goes when you are listening to a story not waiting for a destination. ...Waiting for a washroom however is a different matter. Why can't they have washrooms available right as soon as you step off an airplane? No they make you wait until you have passed through customs before there is one to be had. Last year I almost had the most embarrassing incident of crapping my pants at the San Jose airport in Costa Rica. I almost fainted from the pains ripping through my stomach! I look back now and laugh but then I was in complete agony after having to wait an hour and a half in the customs line.Bodily functions wait for no one! ....In saying all this I think the number one way a person can combat wating is to live in the moment, not to project in the future. People must think about the future but sometimes they do that too much and miss the NOW.So the next time you are consciously waitng for something do something to keep your mind occupied to make that time pass by productively.

Waiting for clothes to dry, the kettle to boil and the toilet to flush are all things which can be done in conjunction with other more productive activities. If not, then Holly you have mislead us about your organizational skills. Impatience is not the evil sister of waiting, rather waiting spawns impatience. Therefore waiting is the chicken and impatience is the egg. It is not clear to me how bringing a puzzle or book staves off impatience since these are not things that can be done while fuming impatiently. I also did not understand the relevance in bringing up your bodily functions. As you say bodily functions wait for no one and you can solve puzzles, listen to audio books and read until the cows come home but these handy hints will not hold back the digestive tide.
ReplyDeletePerhaps next time you are compelled to share this kind of flawed thinking, you should go wait for the toilet to flush or the kettle to boil and the notion might pass.
Well now T how very good of you to share your opinion of my post..But that is just what it is ...your opinion...What really concerns me however is how you feel comepelled to rip me apart each and evry time I write something. And why is it that you have an alias? You obviously know me as a person yet you hide behind the Name "T"..why is that? So you can slice me open with your scathing remarks ? I can however read between your cliche ridden piffery and I have discovered that you are in reality one of these people who are the naysayers of this world and also one of these people that twist everything around to suit your own means. And thank you for giving me an idea for a future post.."The Perils of Bodily Functions" look for it soon at a blog near you.
ReplyDeleteA person who writes a blog entitled thoughts and advice should know two things, one, that people are going to expect something just a little different and two that there will be either critism or someone poking fun at your writings. You did say in an earlier post, that you do not take critism well and this begs the question why a blog which invites critism? Or did you expect that everyone was going to marvel at evey word you wrote?
ReplyDeleteI am sorry that you have taken my previous posting so personally because it was primarily meant as my take on your opinion and not as a personal slight. You made reference to my alias yet I see that others here have one as well. I also saw that a few others have made less than complimentary comments yet you seem to be focused on my 'cliche ridden' piffery(?). Good luck on your future blogs. They sound very mature and insightful.
I thinks perhaps T that you are jealous that I have something of value to say...you however ...do not.
